The Sauna Vulcano was established in 1972, a few years after the abolishment of Paragraph 175, a law which had made homosexuality a crime. Up until 1969 in Germany, homosexuals could be sent to prison for their 'crime'. Despite some resistance in the beginning, our Sauna was able to open thanks to the generosity of homeowners and the neighborhood, who were for the most part open and tolerant. The Sauna Vulcano fought for its place in the liberal community of Cologne. We were an example to other saunas in Cologne and the rest of Germany. It has always been our mission to support and defend the gay community. We are still standing! The Sauna Vulcano counts itself as one of the oldest gay saunas in Europe. There is even a gay city tour where groups of people gather in front of our sauna and hear our story. Whoever tours our sauna can really get a sense of the gay movement in Cologne. Today, our sauna is a popular meeting place for gay men from all over the world. Whether from Lapland, China, Russia, New Zealand or America – everyone knows where the real action in Cologne is! For almost 35 years, the Sauna Vulcano has welcomed everyone: Whether old or young, from 18- 95 year olds, each age group is represented here and welcome! Over the years, however it has become clear that we are the sauna for older men. The Sauna Vulcano is a paradise for those who seek Bears, Daddys, Grampas and middle-aged men. We offer a relaxing, friendly and informal atmosphere for our guests. If you haven't been to the Sauna Vulcano, you don't know what you're missing!
